Weekend Without Wells

For the early birds. Saturday was a rest day- no riding at all. Today I overslept and ended up blowing off Wells Ave. I could have made it if I snuck out of the house solo, but we had a birthday party right on Needham St at 3:00, meaning I would be making two round trips to Newton, not a good idea. As much as I love racing at Wells, the extra sleep was worth missing it. There's always Ninigret on Wednesday. At about 6:00 pm I went out and did a punishing hilly 80 minute ride. Wore my Polar HRM and the average HR of my CP60 (the first hour) was 164. Sounds kind of low to me? I'm wondering how much my form has evolved since my illness in Rochester- where the stomach bug kept me off the bike for 4 days. CTL is down to a very weak 75.. it was 105-110 back when I was averaging 200 miles a week for five months in a row.. These past 7 days- 134 miles and no racing. My numbers at Ninigret Wednesday should be a good indication of where I stand. I can also look back at the data for the two weeks before 2007's Bob Beal and compare it to my latest CP values. Holy crap Bob Beal is next weekend! The easier road course is going to be cool. Now to find a TT bike so I can improve on last year's time, which was a mediocre 6:56.

To me anyway, Wells felt super hard. At times I was going hard and moving backwards at the same time -- not a good sign. Maybe some of your loyal readers who were there can chime in and let me know if they felt it was hard or if it was just me. I was unscrewing my brake barrels halfway through because I thought my brakes must be rubbing... The second half averaged almost 43 kph, not slow, but not screaming either. For now I'm blaming the GP4s...

Who was driving the pace? Any real hot dogs show up yesterday?

Damned if I know. I barely got to the front. Skip was there. I was trying to work hard, but still, I was dieing but nobody else looked too pressured, so maybe it was just me.

I'm told that Wells Ave yesterday was difficult, but not as difficult as the Sunday before.
Caulk it up as a bad day. I've been dropped at Wells mid-summer while in top form. Could it be that you were carrying a seed of doubt?

Solo- seemed like the easiest Wells of the year to me. Pace was so slow I actually cinched down my brakes for added resistance. I think the problem is this race is roughly 9 hours too short for you. Either that, or it's your reluctance to embrace the latest technology- you're not PowerTapping Your Potential™
Kidding, of course :-) Yeah, I'd say it was a tough one. Maybe not as hard as the previous Sunday when the wind shredded the field into mini-pelotonettes, but definitely tough. Skip and Bill Y did some serious damage at the front. And the fact that it was shortened by 5 laps only condensed the pain....

I felt like if it hadn't been for the 300 pace cars they brought in to neutralize the race every lap or two, I might have got dropped...
