Bought it today for 800 clams. Pity my ignorance and help me choose shoes and pedals. I don't want to fall prey to the typical buyer's remorse of "Bought a cross bike... raced it, once..."
I think that all off-road clipless pedals suck. But then again I haven't tried them all, so that statement is pure BS. Of those I've actually tried, I find that Time ATACS (the new ones) suck the least. The others I've tried do not support my feet. But I'm someone with $600 custom made road shoes, so I guess I'm fussy.
I've upgraded to a set of shimano 959s but because i got a deal on the pedals and the 959s work with my cleats but have wicked better mud shedding than the 747s i had before.
The eggbeater is great but has the micro-platform that some folks (like solobreak) bitch abuot. So they have various upgrades in platform sizes. The guy i got the 959s had switched to the Candy pedals. A small platform but its at least a platform.
The fact that Crank Brothers is the Title sponsor of the US CX GP should be a rather good indication of the acceptance of these pedals as THE standard in cyclocross.
Unless you have some other reason to stick with another pedal system (like me with every shoe having SPD - yup, even road) the Crank Bro's is the way to go.

Most folks seem to run the Crank Brother's stuff.
